Question: What is mammogram?
Answer: A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that assist in determining the nature of a breast problem. It may detect breast problems that cannot be felt by yourself or your doctor.

Question: What is an ultrasound examination of the breast?
Answer: Ultrasound uses sound waves to generate pictures and therefore possible problems within the breasts can be seen. This uses a different technology and therefore may detect problems not seen on mammogram.

Question: Will I need both investigations for screening?
Answer: It depends on the appearance of the breast tissue on the mammogram and the nature of the problem detected. As already mentioned, a high proportion of the local women have dense breast tissue. To optimize detection rates, one may consider to do both investigations for screening.

Question: Are there any other forms of imaging that may be useful for screening?
Answer: Apart from mammography and ultrasound examination, MRI may be done. However, this is only useful for women at high risk of developing breast cancer at a relatively young age.

Question: Is mammogram harmful?
Answer: The amount of radiation from mammography equipment is actually very low.
